Background:

For much of his youth, Gaijin has been an orphan. He cannot remember anything about his first few years, such as his parents, and had been living in orpahanages until he was almost 10. At that point he ran from the orphanages and became a homeless street performer in a poor neighborhoods, mostly distracting people then stealing their money. A woman, however, saw Gaijin stealing from her, and easily caught the little thief as he tried to run. She saw he was broke and hungry and ended up treating the child to food, where he learned the woman was the master of a nearby martial arts school. This school was just outside of the empire, where people would occassionally send students to train. The school was not well known and had few people training there. The woman decided to adopt the poor child, seeing that he had potential and hoping to help him realize it.

 

Gaijin quickly proved that he truely had the potential his new adopted mother and master thought. He quickly rose to the top of his class, much to the annoyance of the other students. They believed the prodigy child was distracting and hogging their master for himself, and shunned the new student. This training went on for several years, until Gaijin was 18 years old.

 

Gaijin was practicing with a sword, when he had an epiphany. He thought of a new way to utilize a sword in combat, involving drawing the sword and attacking with it in one motion. He began attempting to practice this new style when not busy training in more common martial arts. He kept up this secret training for two years, and then showed his master the style he had been working on. Not only was his adoptive mother not impressed, but she berrated him for spending all that wasted time on this 'worthless combat technique'. She felt he should be focusing on his studies using his masters style of martial arts. Later that night, Gaijin ran away, stealing his master's sword, Windrazor, hoping to prove his combat techique had merit, and to perfect it. His adopted mother was not worried about her child running away, realizing that he would be back at some point to return to his studies after his efforts failed. The other students, who disliked Gaijin anyway felt this was an affront to the school honor, believing that the adopted child prodigy had only stayed at the school to steal from it. Once they finished their training, they vowed to find and capture (or in some cases, kill) Gaijin and return the sword to their teacher.

 

It has been two years since he ran away, and the draft has since started. Though the school is free from the draft, Gaijin is not, though he has successfully avoided it so far. He feels his purpose is more important than to join some group of thugs. He now wanders around looking for ways to get money, and for strong people to challenge, hoping to perfect his new combat style and return home to prove it could work.
